Simple Steps to Growing Carrot Seeds

Once you’ve decided to grow carrot seeds you’ll need to start preparing your soil, making sure it gets plenty of light but not too much. Start out by digging out about one inch of ground, making sure you pack away any earth that is exposed when you plant the seeds. Place the carrots in a row, about one inch apart, and use stakes to support them. Make sure they are in a well-drained spot; a sandy location will not work well.

Once you’re ready to plant, remove all of the carrot seeds from their bags and lay them on a flat surface with the inside down. In a small pail or container, mix together one tablespoon of each soil type (coarse sand and fine silt) and fill with water so they can soak. Allow to dry completely. After they are completely dry, remove the seed heads from their stems and place them in an airtight container. This will help the seeds from going stale while they’re in the greenhouse.

The last step is to place the carrot seedlings in a plastic bag and place them in an undisturbed area where they will remain dry. The carrot seedling can stay in a dark cupboard for a few weeks, but in general they need to be moved at least once a week. The reason you want to keep them in a dry place is that they will need the sun to grow, but if the area gets too much it will dry out the carrot seedling and make them not grow properly. The last step is to water well but make sure it’s not dry before covering the bag with a plastic trash bag so no pests can find their way into your vegetable garden.
